Some in society like to scapegoat unions as inflexible and myopic. However, in Massachusettes, where teacher unions are powerful, student achievement is quite high. It is safe to say that a strong union is not a problem in Massachusettes.
Additionally, teachers need the peace of mind that they have protection against arbitrary adminstrative decisions. Future education reforms will not be attainable without the input and full participation of teachers.
