The Hispanic Engineering Science and Technology organization, known as HESTEC of UTPA along with Exxon Mobile has recognized the contributions to education made by Mr. James Ulatowski a teacher at Johnny Economedes High School. Mr. Ulatowski has been given the Teacher of The Year award by HESTEC. He teaches Geometry, PreCal & Engineering Math at Johnny Economedes High School. He is a retired United States Airforce Engineer of nearly fifty-five years experience, before venturing into teaching profession in the Rio Grande Valley.  Mr. Ulatowski jokes that HESTEC is a Hispanic organization and now signs his E-mails "Sergio."   Edinburg AFT is proud of having Mr. Ulatowski as a member, but even prouder of the legacy of learning he has contributed to the students of ECISD.

Some of the success with students is attributed to his use of technology in the classroom. "A lot of teachers have the opinion that there is too much technology in school," says Mr. Ulatowski. "I'm of the opinion that there is not enough technology . . ." His principal Gloria Rivera noted that Mr. Ulatowski has taken all the tools available to him and incorporated them in the classroom.Mr. Ulatowski is known for becoming familiar with technology and capitalizing on this knowledge by engaing the students through the use of these tools. Principal Rivera lauded Mr. Ulatowski's use of technology by stating, "The electronics realy don't scare kids. If we place before them the right tools the kids are going to use them. It sure helps a whole lot when our staff is not scared of them."
