Superintendent Salary Cut

At the August Board meeting Dr. Daisy Lee voluntarily took a three day furlough from her contract.  Now all of management, CSEA, and the Classified unit have three day furloughs for the upcoming school year.  It should be noted however, that a three day furlough from a classified (or certificated) employee working 180 days is a bigger pecentage cut than three days from someone in management who works around 220 days.

The Certificated Unit is now the only group without a contract.  It would be easy for the District to arrive at an agreement with the Certificatged unit if it was just about a three day furlough.  However, the District has also taken the three Buy Back Days, wants to increase average class sizes by three students and increase adjunct and other responsibilities.  It seems the District is intent on balancing its budget on the backs of teachers.

It is our hope that the Federal legislation recently passed by Congress will ease the financial pressure in the distirct and allow for an agreement to be reached at the next bargaining session on August 30.

If you want to go fast, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.

Founded on January 18, 1972, the SFAFT stands alone as the only union in a Catholic secondary system affiliated with the AFT. It is hoped that this website helps to clarify our history and improve communications. For quick reference is our Constitution and Collective Bargaining Agreement. You will also find the award winning brochure “Identity & Meaning” (CFT Communications Awards, 3/17/07 and AFT Communications Network, 7/6/10). Also included is an article on our history that was published in California Teacher. Many other links will help you stay informed and connected, including a Group Page on Facebook.

Congress Passes Bill to Provide $10 Billion to Support 160,000 Education Jobs Nationwide

President Obama signed into law a $10 billion bill that will support 116,000 teacher jobs nationwide.  California is expected to receive $1.2 billion.  It is unknown how quickly the funds will arrive in the district.

Results for Parking Survey

The results of the District's proposed parking survey are in.  Of the 73 respondants, here was the breakdown:

Do you plan on paying the $10 parking fee?

  • yes--26%
  • no--52%
  • undecided--22%

Do you beleive the District is justified in assessing a $10 parking charge?

  • yes--4%
  • No--88%
  • Undecided--8%

Do you support the union's attempt to challenge the $10 parking fee?

  • yes--90%
  • no--0%
  • Undecided--10%

Would you participate in an employee boycott of the fee?

  • yes--66%
  • no--10%
  • undecided--25%

Of course, the $10 is not the issue but rather the principle of the matter.  The District has not done anything to foster better relations with employees during these difficult times.  In fact, they are asking for three furlough days, three buy-back days, an increase in class size averages, an increase in adjunct duty, and...a $10 parking fee.

The GFCCE believes this to be a change in working conditions and has demanded that such changes be negotiatied.  The District has yet to provide the professional courtesy of a response.
